Event Description

Hello!

As someone with a unique and distinctive perspective on life in Bristol, we’d like to invite you to take part in A GREAT BIG PICTURE OF YOU, a celebratory improvised drawing and photography project taking place at Bristol Old Vic on the final day of this year’s Bristol Jam – the UK’s only festival of improvised performance: http://www.bristololdvic.org.uk/jam.html and http://bristoljam.ning.com/

We’re sending this invite to a variety of people and the first twenty-five to get back to us will be sent a disposable camera in the post.

And then what?

All you have to do is fill your camera with images – it’s entirely up to you what you choose to capture on film. Then bring your camera, undeveloped, to the opening night of Jam on 26th October.

[If you can’t make it to the opening party but would like to participate, let us know when you register your interest and we’ll arrange an alternative way to get your camera back to us.]

And once we have the cameras?

On the last day of the festival, five of Bristol’s finest artists will draw from Dawn till Dusk to create an 8ft by 12ft collaborative illustration. This will be entirely improvised! Your photos will be their inspiration but they won’t have seen the images until the morning they arrive.

We’d love you to be there at dusk on Saturday 6th November to celebrate the unveiling of the finished illustration and an exhibition of your photographic images. There’ll even be cake!!

Intrigued?

To take part, or for more information, email Kate – kyedigaroff@bristololdvic.org.uk – by Friday 8th October.

Many thanks and we hope you want to play with us!

A GREAT BIG PICTURE OF YOU is a collaborative drawing and photography project developed by Bristol-based designer and illustrator Chris Gylee in collaboration with Bristol Ferment.

Throughout October, people from all over Bristol were invited to take photographs on free disposable cameras, and to return them at the start of Bristol Jam for developing. All the photographs were taken through the camera viewfinder and onto analogue film with no opportunity to edit the photographs or to review the images before submitting them for display. The photographers could take pictures of anything they were interested in, and are all invited back to the finale of Jam to see their collective images exhibited in Coopers Gallery.

On the last day of the festival, a team of five local illustrators will draw from dawn till dusk to create an 8ft by 12ft collaborative illustration. This work will be an improvised response using the collection of photographs as its inspiration. The team won’t have seen until they arrive in the space and pick up their pens!

The drawing team are:

Joseph Roberts – www.josephrobertsillustration.co.uk
Laurie Stansfield – http://lauriestansfield.blogspot.com
Philippa Thomas – http://philippathomas.tumblr.com
Joseph Wallace – www.joseph-wallace.co.uk

Come along and see what’s going on, and then join us as the sun goes down to celebrate the epic finished drawing, just before the final night of Jam gets underway. There’ll even be cake!

* On Saturday 6th November the sun will rise at 7.15am and set at 4.35pm.
